Pilates is a non-impact form of body conditioning that focuses on strengthening and balancing the muscles of the body, particularly the abdominal muscles and the back. Pilates works on building strength from the inside out, creating better posture and flexibility by correcting muscle imbalances.

The Pilates method was developed by German born Joseph Pilates. Suffering from illness and frailty as a child, he turned to physical fitness to improve his health. He studied a variety of different disciplines and from these he devised the Pilates method. After moving to New York in the 1920's, his studio soon attracted actors, dancers and elite athletes.
